The
Channel of Vääksy (The Channel of Vesijärvi)
The canal
project of Vääksy was already under consideration in the 1850s. The Emperor’s
management believed that the channel was unnecessary because the southern end of
Vesijärvi had no businesses that needed the channel. The population of Lahti at
the time was around 200 and all business was centered around Anianpelto, which
is located at the southern end of Päijänne. Goods that arrived by water were
taken to Porvoo by horses.
The construction of the Channel was finally
started in 1868. At best, 400 men and 200 horses were working on the project.
The Channel was completed in 1871 and it was renovated from 1909 to 1911. Today,
the Channel of Vääksy is one of the busiest inland waterways in Europe. |

The Channel of Kalkkinen
The waters of Päijänne flow
into Lake Ruotsalainen and from there onto Lake Kymijoki through the rapids of
Kalkkinen. Many petitions were filed about the channeling the route, before the
Emperor accepted the project approved by the Senate with its financial
allocations in 1875.
The Senate supported the
project because the traffic of the Channel of Vesijärvi was brisk, and the
construction of a new channel would help the timber floating to Lake Kymijoki.
The construction of the
Channel of Kalkkinen began in 1875. The Channel was opened for traffic in the
autumn of 1878. The channel barrier was built using the same techniques that
were used in the Channel of Vesijärvi. The size of the channel barrier was also
exactly the same as in the Channel of Vesijärvi.
